COUNTRYSIDE IN THE PLAYROOM

P1 and P2 have been enjoying their afternoon sessions in the playroom. Their topic is ‘The Countryside’ and the playroom has been set up in different countryside zones.

  • Milk ‘At the dairy’ Milk goes from farm to dairy to shop

  • Play Dough - making insects

  • Farm play

ERUPTING VOLCANOES!

As part of their ‘In the News’ topic, P5/6/7 have been looking at volcanoes and the structure of the earth. They made model volcanoes using Modroc. They then had great fun watching them erupt. They also used plasticine to make a model of the earth’s structure, which showed the different layers under our feet.

ARE YOU DRINKING ENOUGH WATER?

P3 and P4 as part of Literacy have been working on Persuasive writing. Over the past number of weeks they have been looking at the importance of drinking water to keep our bodies healthy. They have written and made posters to persuade people to drink more water.

RASHARKIN THEN AND NOW

As part of Shared Education, P4 and P5 have been looking at the history of Rasharkin. P5 with Miss young, have been writing about some of the historical facts they have learnt over the past number of weeks, both in the Shared Education sessions, and also from talking to older family members. They then also wrote about some of the hopes that they have for the future of the village.

THE COUNTRYSIDE P1 AND P2

Our P1 and P2 children have really been enjoying their topic for this half term - The Countryside. This week they heard about cows and milk. They then discussed what other dairy products can be made from milk. Thanks to Dale Farm for supplying some delicious cheddar cheese which all the P1 and P2 children got to sample.

P3 and P4 PANCAKE NUMERACY

In numeracy today, P3 and P4 were given a ‘Delicious Pancake Challenge’. They were given a pancake menu with five toppings -Lemon, Sugar, Golden Syrup, Strawberry Laces and Midget Gems. Each topping had a price. Their challenge was to design six pancakes using two different toppings on each pancake. They then had to calculate how much each pancake would cost using the prices from the menu. They used written sums and also calculators to do their calculations. They then chose their favourite pancake design, and made it, and ate it!

P5 PANCAKE SMILES

P5 have been celebrating pancake Tuesday by constructing ‘Pancake Smiles’. The children were given a list of ingredients - strawberries. bananas, chocolate buttons and Smarties. They had to design a ‘pancake smile’ on their pancakes. The children wrote instructions and then followed their instructions to make, and best of all, to enjoy their creations.

P2 NUMERACY

P2 investigated how to split numbers into smaller numbers -partitioning

They worked out how to partition 10 into 3 sets. Their investigation involved -

  • finding patterns

  • looking at all possibilities

  • paired work and individual work

P1 NUMERACY INVESTIGATION

P1 have been learning about capacity. They have been looking at full/ empty/ half full. In their numeracy investigation, the children used syringes, cups and teaspoons to fill medicine bottles. They also estimated, worked out and then recorded how many syringes to fill the cup.

MOVING MONSTERS

As part of their ‘ Thrills and Spills’ topic, P5/6/7 were looking at simple pneumatic systems. They were given the challenge of using a pneumatic system to create a moving part in a monster. The children used syringes, tubes and balloons to make moving eyes, arms, mouths and tongues. They all looked fantastic.

POETRY HANDS P1 and P2

P1 and P2 have been looking at some Poetry. They looked at ‘A Poem About Hands’. Poetry is a great way to help reading and spelling. The children were able to pick out word pairs, eg. cat, mat - door, floor, - hand, sand. They then used magnetic letters to spell these word pairs.

P2 DICE INVESTIGATION

In this investigation, the P2 children noticed that opposite numbers on a dice add up to 7!

P2 NUMERACY - COUNTING IN 2s

Our P2 children have been learning to count in 2s.  They looked at pairs of socks and gloves etc. and learned to count them. They then made their own 2s counting sticks.

P4 and P5 STEM CHALLENGE

P4 and P5 were given three STEM challenges.  In teams, they had to build a bridge from Lego or CLIXI or other building materials, that could support a single can of food or bag of sugar.  They then had to make a bridge that could support two cans or two bags of sugar.  The final challenge was to see who could build the TALLEST bridge that could still support a single can or a bag of sugar. As you can see there was lots of team work and effort put in to completing these tasks.

IZAK9

Children in P6/7 have recently been working on fractions, decimal and percentages equivalence. They used a maths resource called Izak9 for this.  There are fractions, percentages and images on each of the 27 Izak9 cubes. The children then have to work together as a team to build a giant 'equivalence' wall, showcasing the relationship between the three variations. The learning environment is always rich in 'maths talk', discussion and debate as they work together to find the solution to the task set.
